US National Strategy 2022 calls China ‘competitor’, Russia ‘threat’

The document also named India a key ally in furthering the US' Indo-Pacific strategy, as part of the country's goal towards a 'free and open' Indo-Pacific region.

Washington DC: The US 2022 National Security Strategy was released on Wednesday as America’s response to “tremendous challenges and the unprecedented opportunities” the world is facing today. “Out-competing China and constraining Russia,” is the main goal of the strategy.

The 48-page document, which was delayed by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, includes no major shifts in thinking and introduces no significant foreign policy doctrines, says a report by Reuters.

“Even after Russia’s invasion, China represents the most consequential challenge to the global order and the United States must win the economic arms race with the superpower if it hopes to retain its global influence,” says the document.

US President Joe Biden maintained that India is a key ally in Washington’s Indo-Pacific strategic initiative, despite a clear primary agenda in the country’s 2022 National Security Strategy.

“We will deepen our cooperation with democracies and other like-minded states. From the Indo-Pacific Quad (Australia, India, Japan, United States) to the U.S.-EU Trade and Technology Council, from AUKUS (Australia, United Kingdom, United States) to I2-U2 (India, Israel, UAE, United States), we are creating a latticework of strong, resilient, and mutually reinforcing relationships that prove democracies can deliver for their people and the world,” it reads.
